According to The latest report of The Herald on July 1, a Chinese mining company in the Shurugwi district of Zimbabwe is recently providing food aid and agricultural projects to local communities to promote the implementation of the "Rural Development 8.0" model. The model aims to eradicate poverty completely through the link of "agricultural development - rural industrialization - rural development - Vision 2030". The Chengetai Chenxi Mining Company has generously donated 60,000 tons of corn meal to support the government's response to the drought caused by El Nino. They also pledged to set up a nutritious one-hectare irrigable garden in each township in the area. "This is just the beginning of a great future for the Shurugwe community," said Simon Karimanzira, managing director of the mining company. "We will continue to provide cornmeal to communities to ensure that no one goes hungry during the dry season." At the same time, we will ensure that each township has an irrigable one-hectare nutritious garden so that residents can grow crops all year round and increase their income." "In the second phase, we plan to provide domestic animals such as poultry, goats and pigs to the villagers to enhance the self-sufficiency of the community," added Mr Karimanzira.
Joseph Mpasi, MP for the Northern region of Shurugwe, thanked the mining company for its generosity. "As a constituency, we are deeply satisfied with the company-led project," he said. "In addition to providing food security, they are repairing roads and greatly improving the lives of the people in the community." I hope other mining companies will follow suit."
Owen Ncube, Minister of Provincial Affairs and Decentralization in the Central Province, praised the initiative: "The noble behaviour shown by the mining companies directly supports the drought relief programme of the Second Republic. The programme is based on the Chieftain Granary and other social safety nets provided by the Social welfare sector and development partners."
"These food assistance systems are designed to ensure food and nutrition security for every family. As President Mnangagwa has repeatedly stressed, no one will die of hunger under the Second Republic, "Minister Ncube said.
